Thank you! So glad you found it useful :D

Yes! I thought the comment on themes might be controversial, too. Hence my comment - I think you probably do need to pay attention to themes, but maybe more in the editing than in the first draft, depending on your writing style - and I think maybe that's what Isobelle was suggesting, as it sounds like she has a very intensive editing process.

Hmm, that reminds me of an article I read yesterday: http://io9.com/5855273/how-to-write-a-sincere-first-draft-of-your-science-fiction-or-fantasy-epic

In particular, the section about "what you want to say" (trying to tackle themes, versus having a "tag cloud" of ideas milling around under the surface).

Thanks for sharing this! I'm disappointed I missed the talk.
Did she really say writers don't need to plan themes? I bet there'd be a few writers who disagree with that.

Oooooooh, very exciting! I was wondering whether you had ordered something ereading-related.

My boyfriend really enjoys reading on his iPad. He did mention it can get a little heavy after a while, but obviously there are a lot of other benefits too!

After your inspiring post, I have now ordered myself an iPad 2... I blame you.

Very much looking forward to it arriving, and finally getting stuck into a few books I have awaiting my attention :)

Thanks Japh! Glad you found it useful. That reminds me, I guess there is another factor, in terms of portability - whether you carry a bag around in the first place!

I do find the eReader a lot more portable than an average book, though. It's definitely lighter and thinner, which makes a big difference when you're trying to cram it in a small messenger bag (or similar). Not having to worry about the corners getting bent is nice too.

Thanks for writing this up. I've been thinking quite a lot lately about eReaders and looking around at what's available besides the standard Kindle / iPad fare.

I was also really concerned about whether or not it's really much more practical than just carrying a books around. I think you may have convinced me... now to research which device suits me best...

@mazil

To be honest, alpaca may or may not have rendered me ill for several days, almost cutting short my trip to Machu Picchu but it was kind of tasted like lamb as far as I recall.
Our Western squeamishes are strange, aren't they?
I imagine tuna really hate dolphins, jealous to the enth.
I was walking across a farm the other day and a white goat hid amongst the sheep. They are remarkably similar yet us Westerners don't eat the goat thanks to some Pan based myth (or pan fried, I'm not sure).

Home is also a grand folly I guess. I'm wearing slippers. Is there a greater folly?

@Emerson

Oh my! That is a grand folly! How was the alpaca? I think I would also refuse guinea pig... I want to try and de-westernise my brain from being scared of non-standard meats, but I can't help but feel extra sorry for small creatures.

Or maybe that's my western squeamishness at play again? With small animals, you can't disguise the fact that you're eating a small animal, whereas with larger animals, you can cut off a nice steak and ignore the "animal" aspect.

And yes - I don't think I could ever run out of places I'd want to see in the world :D Though it is always nice being "home" for a while (wherever that may be).

@Steve

Oops! Oh, indeed. I should have listed milk or dark chocolate as well - I especially love dark chocolate. I do think white chocolate has its own appeal, though, and not enough chocolate bars utilise it.

Hm. Maybe a squishy cookie dough with white chocolate chips (similar to a Mars bar's nougat, but a bit more cookie-dough-like) and a layer of raspberry jelly on a cookie base, coated in dark chocolate. Mmmm.

I'm unsure about the WordPress and RSS thing. Of course, it's great if people come to visit... but I'm aware that a lot of people only read through RSS, and it's a bit embarrassing for the formatting to come out wrong... for my blog post to seemingly have an unrelated llama diversion (which it does, but not in the main body text).
